Prism
Prism was written for Dr. William Staub and The East Carolina University Symphonic Wind Ensemble. It is orchestrated for chamber wind ensemble (14 players) to facilitate performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was premiered at the 2021 ECU Bandorama concert
Originally starting out as a mix of a composing exercise and an experiment in writing for orchestra, Prism has since blossomed into a much more developed piece for chamber winds. It relies heavily on late minimalist techniques which explore tone color and harmonic shifts. Though not a programatic piece, Prism is inspired by the concept of light through a prism which turns into a rainbow. There are transitional sections, but the colors stand apart from one another. The piece follows the same form, but the sections do not correspond to specific colors.

“Prism… walks the line between enigmatic and intriguing, and weird and wacky, but did so with careful elegance.”
