Quasicrystal
Quasicrystal is an aleatoric piece for guitar quartet or ensemble that is designed to be played online. The piece was commissioned by Dr. Elliot Frank of the East Carolina University Guitar Ensemble in the fall of 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Frank wanted a piece which could be played long distance, since the ensemble could not meet that school year. The result is a piece that took advantage of the latency issues presented by online conferencing platforms in order to create a rhythmic, timbral, and harmonic soundscape which would not have been possible otherwise. Below is the premier of Quasicrystal performed by the ECU Guitar Ensemble. Given the aleatoric nature of the piece, this is only one interpretation of how the piece can be performed.
